River life at Windhaven, your Dubois RV home base. The Town Park and River Walk described below are separate public places in town.
Dubois Town Park and River Walk can give your RV vacation something a big attraction cannot: an easy day with no need to make every hour count. Between Yellowstone outings, museum visits or guided adventures, spend time in town, take a river-side walk and return to Windhaven without another full-day driving itinerary.
Start with the public Town Park
The Town of Dubois lists Town Park at 10 Bighorn Lane, with picnic areas, tables, restrooms, a playground and a River Walkway. The town also states that overnight camping is not allowed there. Think of the park as a day stop, separate from your RV campsite.
Choose what suits the group. Some visitors want a walk; others want a picnic or a place for children to play. You do not need to add a hike or a long list of activities to make it a useful vacation day. Check posted notices and current conditions when you arrive.
Let the River Walk set a slower pace
Destination Dubois describes the Riverwalk as extending on both sides of the river. Use the actual path and posted information to decide how far to go. Ask about present conditions if accessibility or walking distance is important to your group.
Take time to notice the water, vegetation and birds rather than treating the walk as a route to finish. Bring a camera or binoculars, keep a respectful distance from wildlife and supervise children around the river. A public walkway is not a promise of safe swimming or a designated boat launch.
Add local history if it interests you
The Dubois Museum is a separate stop to investigate for a history-centered part of the day. Check its current hours and admission information before making it essential to your plan. It is distinct from the National Museum of Military Vehicles, which deserves its own visit.
If military history is your priority, use our military museum visitor guide. Do not squeeze both museums into a relaxed town day simply because they appear on the same list of local attractions.
A simple town-day plan
- Morning: enjoy a flexible start at your RV and decide how much walking the group wants.
- Park stop: take the River Walk or spend time in the picnic area.
- Lunch: bring a picnic or choose a town business after confirming current hours.
- Optional afternoon: explore local history or browse town, leaving time to return.
Keep the optional part optional. A tired child, an interesting conversation or a change in weather should not make a low-key day feel like a failed itinerary. If weather rules out the park, our indoor Dubois activities guide offers another direction.
Why include a town day in a national-park vacation?
It creates variety and breathing room. You can reset after a long driving day, get ready for tomorrow’s outing or simply enjoy the place where you are staying. It also gives different members of the group space to enjoy different interests without another major departure.
Come back to the Wind River
Windhaven’s full-hookup RV sites, showers and laundry support both active days and quieter ones. Use our Dubois itinerary to combine them in a way that feels like a vacation, not a schedule you are trying to beat.
