Choosing a full-hookup RV park in Wyoming or a campground inside a national park is not a contest with one right answer. It is a decision about what you want your days—and evenings—to feel like. The best choice matches your RV, your preferred attractions and the amount of driving you want to do.
Windhaven is in Dubois, outside Yellowstone and Grand Teton. We offer a riverside home base, not a campsite inside either park. That distinction should be part of your planning from the beginning.
What full hookups change about a trip
Full hookups combine an electrical connection, water and sewer at the site. At Windhaven, sites have 30/50-amp service. For many travelers, that makes daily routines more convenient: you can settle in, manage utilities at your site and use the RV as a familiar home between outings.
Compare individual campsites rather than assuming every public campground lacks hookups or every private campground has the same facilities. Think about your actual electrical needs, tank capacity and the length of the stay. Having the right setup matters more than a label.
What camping inside the park gives you
Staying inside Yellowstone or Grand Teton can reduce the drive to some sights and put you closer to an early start. If your whole trip revolves around one area of a park, that proximity may matter more than additional campground amenities.
Use the official Yellowstone campground information and Grand Teton camping information to compare reservations, facilities and site restrictions. Neither park allows overnight camping in ordinary roadside pullouts as an alternative to a designated campsite.
What a Dubois home base gives you
A Dubois stay makes sense when the vacation includes more than a single park: the military museum, local history, fishing, town meals and regional outings. You can keep the RV parked while choosing different experiences in a separate vehicle, then return to the Wind River setting.
The tradeoff is travel. Map the entire round trip to your chosen attraction, including park roads, stops and potential delays—not merely the distance to an entrance. Our Yellowstone, Grand Teton and Jackson Hole guide helps you think through that choice.
Five questions before you reserve
- Does the site fit the RV and any vehicle you are towing?
- Which utilities and facilities are available at that specific site?
- Are your main destinations concentrated in one area or spread across the region?
- Would you rather change campgrounds or spend some days driving from one base?
- What is open during your dates, and what happens if weather changes the plan?
You can also combine approaches: park camping for one segment and a full-hookup Dubois stay for another. It does not have to be an all-or-nothing decision.
