Horseback riding near Dubois can add a different perspective to a Wyoming RV vacation. Instead of seeing every landscape through a windshield, you can consider a guided outing matched to your experience. The key is choosing the right ride—not assuming every horseback trip is a beginner excursion.
The photograph above shows an RV base at Windhaven, not a riding facility. Windhaven does not operate trail rides; you arrange the activity directly with an outfitter.
Choose the experience before choosing the operator
A short introductory ride, a longer mountain outing and an overnight pack trip are different experiences. Decide what you want to enjoy and what you are comfortable doing. Be honest about prior riding experience rather than selecting a trip solely because its photographs look spectacular.
Destination Dubois’s outdoor directory is a starting point for researching local operators. For example, Wind River Backcountry Outfitters advertises summer trail rides and pack trips. These links are research resources, not a claim of a formal Windhaven partnership or a guarantee that a particular ride will be available.
Ask these questions before booking
- Is this specific ride suitable for a first-time rider?
- What ages, physical requirements or other rider limits apply?
- How much time is actually on horseback, and what terrain is involved?
- What clothing and footwear does the operator require?
- Are helmets or other equipment provided, and what must you bring?
- Where do you meet, how do you get there and what vehicle access is needed?
- What happens if weather changes or a participant cannot ride?
Give the operator relevant information about your group before paying. Their answers should help you choose an outing that fits everyone, not simply get a reservation onto the calendar.
Build the day around the ride
Leave time to reach the meeting point and follow the operator’s arrival instructions. Avoid scheduling another major excursion immediately afterward. You may prefer a meal in town and a quieter afternoon back at the RV.
If some travelers do not want to ride, create a separate plan they will enjoy rather than treating them as passengers in everyone else’s day. Our Dubois activities page offers other starting points.
Keep lodging and activity reservations separate
Confirm the ride’s date and cancellation terms with the outfitter, then arrange your campsite. A Windhaven reservation does not include a trail ride, transportation to it or outfitter equipment. A clear plan prevents both sides from assuming the other has arranged something.
Use WYDOT road information if the meeting point requires a mountain drive, and follow the operator’s current directions for the final approach.
