A military history weekend in Dubois can be much more than a quick vehicle-photo stop. The National Museum of Military Vehicles tells stories of service through immersive galleries and restored equipment. For veterans, military families and history-minded RV travelers, allowing time to absorb those stories makes the trip more meaningful.
Windhaven is a separate RV resort in Dubois, not museum-operated lodging. You arrange admission and tours with the museum, and your campsite with us.
Give the museum a real place in the itinerary
Build the weekend around the experience rather than squeezing it between two long drives. Arrive and settle your RV first, then devote a separate day to the galleries. Check the museum’s official visitor information for current hours, admission and availability before choosing your dates.
Much of the museum experience is indoors. Our exterior photographs show only part of what you will visit. See our museum and RV camping page for the broader introduction and links to the museum’s own material.
For veteran groups, arrange the visit directly
The museum’s group-visit information describes guided and self-guided options, requested meeting space and separately purchased group dining. Contact the museum to confirm what is available for your particular group. A special tour, private room or meal is not automatically included with a Windhaven stay.
Choose a coordinator, gather the group size and desired dates, and ask about interests, mobility needs and the pace of the visit. Then arrange the RV stays separately. Keeping those two reservations clear helps avoid assumptions about bundled services.
Leave room for conversation afterward
Not everyone wants to discuss an emotional exhibit immediately. Give your group flexibility: time together for those who want it and a quieter evening for those who prefer to reflect. A familiar RV can be a comfortable place to return to without adding another scheduled activity.
If you are traveling as a family, ask each person what they are most interested in before the visit. A shared trip does not require every person to move through every gallery at the same pace.
Add another local story, not another exhausting drive
The Dubois Museum’s Camp Dubois POW exhibit provides another local historical connection. Confirm the museum’s hours before planning a second stop. Or keep the remaining time for downtown, a meal and a relaxed morning at camp.
Plan the RV side of the weekend
Windhaven offers full hookups, restrooms, showers and laundry. Check-in is 2 p.m. and check-out is 11 a.m. Review our amenities, reserve an available site, or call (307) 855-5427 to discuss several RVs or a longer stay. Make time for the stories, and give yourself somewhere comfortable to return.
