Old Faithful in Yellowstone. Eruption timing is a prediction, not an appointment—leave room in the day to watch and wait.
Visiting Old Faithful from Dubois deserves a dedicated Yellowstone day. The geyser is the headline, but the surrounding Upper Geyser Basin gives you a reason to stay after the eruption. If you are camping at Windhaven RV Resort, think of this as a substantial outing from an outside-the-park RV base, not a quick stop beside the campground.
Start with road access, not an eruption time
Before choosing a departure time, check Yellowstone’s official park-road status and WYDOT conditions for your approach. Yellowstone’s seasonal road access matters: Windhaven being open year-round does not mean you can drive your own vehicle to Old Faithful year-round.
Look at the whole route, including the drive within Yellowstone. Build in fuel, food, rest stops, entrance delays and time to return. An arrival at the park boundary is not an arrival at the geyser. Save a less ambitious local day as your alternative if conditions or the group’s energy do not suit a long outing.
Where to find Old Faithful eruption predictions
The National Park Service’s Old Faithful guide directs visitors to predictions at the Visitor Education Center, nearby lodges and the NPS app. Use the latest prediction rather than an old screenshot or a claim that the geyser always erupts at one fixed interval.
Give yourself a viewing window. If you arrive between eruptions, use that time for the visitor center, restrooms or a nearby permitted walk. Keep your group together and agree on a meeting place before anyone heads off for a snack or a photograph.
Do more than take the eruption photograph
The Upper Geyser Basin includes boardwalk routes through a concentration of thermal features. Choose a walk that suits your group’s mobility and available time; you do not need to reach every named feature to have a memorable visit. Use the official map and ranger advice to match the route to conditions.
A useful sequence is visitor information first, the eruption when its viewing window approaches, then a basin walk. If another geyser interests you, ask about its current prediction rather than building an inflexible schedule around it. One well-chosen extra experience is better than a list that keeps everyone watching the clock.
Keep thermal sightseeing on the designated route
Follow Yellowstone’s official safety guidance and remain on designated boardwalks and trails. These are natural thermal areas, not a place to step off for a clearer photograph. Stay attentive to children, changing weather and wildlife near the route.
Carry water, layers and what your group needs for a full day away from camp. Download useful maps before departure, charge your phone and take a backup power source if you rely on it for navigation. Plan your food stops instead of assuming every seasonal service will be open.
Choose what you will leave for another day
Old Faithful, a lengthy basin walk, a distant wildlife drive and Jackson shopping do not all need to happen together. Put your must-see experience first and keep additions conditional. Our regional trip guide helps organize separate Yellowstone, Grand Teton and Jackson Hole outings.
