Yellowstone fishing permits are separate from the Wyoming license an angler may use outside the park. A road trip that combines the Wind River and Yellowstone can cross different regulatory systems. Start with the exact water you intend to fish, then verify the permit and current rules that apply there.
The park has its own permit
Yellowstone’s official fishing page says anglers age sixteen and older need a valid Yellowstone National Park fishing permit. State fishing licenses are not valid or required for ordinary fishing inside the park. It links to permit purchasing and current regulations.
Younger anglers have specific supervision and permit arrangements described in those regulations. Read the applicable rules for the child and adult together; do not infer them from an adult permit purchase. Keep your permit accessible as required, and obtain official answers if a boundary or special area is unclear.
A permit does not make every water open
Review the exact river, stream or lake for season dates, closures and permitted methods. Gear, bait, tackle and fish-handling requirements can differ. The species you must release or retain is not something to guess from a previous trip or a photograph.
Carry the current regulations offline. If you cannot confidently identify a fish or understand the rule at a particular location, get guidance before fishing there. This article is a planning introduction, not a replacement for park regulations.
Decide whether this is a fishing day or sightseeing day
Fishing involves setup, access and time beside the water. If the rest of the family expects a fast tour of multiple attractions, discuss that before leaving the RV. A dedicated angling outing is often easier to plan than promising both an unhurried session and a full sightseeing circuit.
Make a weather and turnaround plan. Know where the vehicle will be parked and how you will return to it. Respect wildlife space and thermal-area barriers; neither a promising pool nor a good photograph justifies leaving an authorized route.
Watercraft add another set of requirements
The park’s fishing guidance also addresses watercraft permits and aquatic invasive species inspection. Bringing a float tube or boat does not remove those requirements. Verify the equipment-specific rules before transporting and launching a craft.

A prepared angler’s home base
Windhaven is beside the Wind River in Dubois, outside Yellowstone. We provide an RV stay, not fishing permits, guaranteed catches or a guiding service. Settle your overnight plan, confirm your chosen water’s rules and leave enough time to enjoy the fishing itself.
