A Thermopolis hot-springs trip from Dubois is a regional excursion, not a quick soak next door to Windhaven. Make the bath house your main destination, check its operation before leaving, and give the drive out and back its own place in the day. This can be an alternative to a national-park itinerary, but it is not a weather-proof trip simply because the destination includes warm water.
Choose the bath house, not just “the hot springs”
Wyoming State Parks’ Hot Springs State Park page identifies the State Bath House as a free public soaking facility in Thermopolis. That is a specific facility, not a promise that every pool or attraction in town is free. Other businesses may offer different experiences and terms.
The park’s August 21, 2026 update announced temporary outdoor-pool construction, with the indoor pool remaining open during the work. An estimated construction duration is not confirmation that the outdoor pool has reopened. Check the latest update or ask park staff which pool is available for your intended visit.
When checking the destination, use the full facility name. Ask about current hours, holiday closures, any maintenance interruption, session arrangements and what you should bring. If a commercial pool is your preference, confirm that operator’s information separately.
Build the outing around one confirmed activity
Start with the time you want to return to Dubois. Then work backward through the return drive, a meal stop, the bath-house visit and the outbound drive. Use current directions for your actual starting point and vehicle rather than copying a drive time from a traveler who began somewhere else.
A smaller day vehicle may give you more flexibility than taking the whole RV combination. Before choosing it, make sure it suits the weather and your group. If you do take the rig, investigate parking and turning space at the destination in advance; a town appearing on a highway map does not establish that a particular parking lot will work.
Leave room for the park without overbooking the day
The official park page also describes a footbridge across the Bighorn River. Treat any extra walk as optional and check current access. A satisfying outing might be one soak, one meal and a little time looking around, rather than a schedule that leaves you rushing back through changing weather.
- Verify the facility’s operation before committing to the drive.
- Check the entire road route and the return forecast.
- Pack swimwear, a towel and dry clothing according to the facility’s guidance.
- Have an alternative that does not depend on the bath house being open.
Is this a good choice for a short Dubois stay?
Possibly, if the hot springs are an experience you specifically want. If you would rather spend less of the day driving, compare this outing with our indoor and rainy-day Dubois ideas. Neither option needs to be squeezed into a Yellowstone day.
Use our Wyoming RV route-planning guide to think about the larger trip. For a Dubois base, review Windhaven’s amenities and check availability. The resort stay and the Thermopolis visit are separate arrangements.
